Build a Dollhouse

Is your little princess in love with the idea of a doll house? If she would love setting up the rooms and using her dolls to act out stories, you can make this dream come true by making a doll house yourself. Don’t worry; this project is great for both beginner and expert do-it-yourself crafters. No matter what your skill level is, you can alter this project to meet your needs and to make it perfect for your little girl.

Before you start, you’ll need to gather the right fixing tools. You will need:

•    Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) or Plywood
•    Table Saw
•    Sandpaper or Handheld Electric Sander
•    Nails
•    Hammer
•    Wood Glue
•    Measuring Tape
•    Square Tool
•    Paint
•    Optional Decorations

These supplies will help you measure, cut and then assemble the pieces of your new doll house. You can finish your doll house with paint, paper, fabrics and small toys.

Measure and Cut the Frame

Start by designing your doll house frame. Sketch it out first so you know what kind of pieces you will need. A common design is to create a box by using two identical boards for either side and then adding a bottom and a back, leaving the front open.

Add a board in the middle to divide the house into two levels and shorter pieces vertically between the floors to divide them into rooms. Of course, you can make the house as tall as you want, adding more levels. Then, cut windows and doors into the sides to make the house more realistic.

If you want to take it a step further, you can even create a pitched roof by using two pieces for the top and measuring an angle on the back piece. Use a slightly longer board for the bottom of the box so there is some area around the house for play and decorating.

Measure carefully before you begin cutting and then use a table saw to make exact cuts.

Assemble the Pieces

Now that you have the pieces cut perfectly, you are ready to put them together. Nail the pieces together so they are secure. You can also use wood glue between the pieces to help secure them and to prevent splitting. Make sure the doll house is stable so it is safe for your little girl.

While the glue is still wet, use a damp rag to wipe away excess glue so it won’t interfere with the paint and decorations you use. Then, let the glue dry for 24 hours.

Add Paint and Decorate

Now you get to add colour! Sand any rough spots and then add a coat of paint. You can use one colour over the entire house or you can use different colours for different parts of the house.

You can also use different materials to decorate and finish the house. For example, you can glue paper to the walls to mimic wall paper and you can use fabric to add texture and to give the floors a carpeted look.

Get creative and look for miniature items at your craft store. Things like mirrors, silk plants and small toys are perfect for filling the house. Don’t be afraid of creating custom pieces from paper or cardboard boxes, which are great for things like cupboards, beds and other furniture.

Don’t forget to decorate the outside of your house! Add things like shutters, plants and even yard decorations to make the house more realistic.

When it comes to decorating and filling doll houses, there are a couple of different approaches you can take. First, you can permanently install fixtures like furniture and decorations. Do this with glue or nails, as needed. Or, you can create pieces for the doll house and set them inside, so your daughter can rearrange them and play with them however she wants.

Many doll houses include a mix of these two approaches. For example, you could attach cupboards and some wall decorations to the house, and then leave things like chairs, beds, tables and other accessories unattached so your daughter can arrange them and rearrange them herself.

Building your own doll house is a fun project that you can even do with your little girl. Let her help choose the colours for the house and help you decide what to use to decorate it. This project is one that will keep giving back as your daughter enjoys countless hours of entertainment playing with it and making it the perfect home for her dolls.
