Blocked drains at the workplace or at home can be a considerable problem, not only due to the nasty smell they create, but also the potential flooding problems caused by blocked leaves and dirt. With this handy guide on how to unblock drains from HSS, you should make light work of this problem any time it should arise.
If your drain is blocked, be sure to act quickly as this problem can escalate quickly. Make sure you have the adequate protection for your hands, such as tough PVC gloves.

You will also require drains rods to make light work of any blockages. If you dont have your own set, use a set of manhole keys to remove the cover. Simply insert a key into each end of the cover, twist and lift to remove the cover.
If you are working in low visibility conditions, be sure to use a compact drain camera to inspect the blockages in more detail.
To clear nearby blockages, be sure to use a drain rod. Multiple sections of drain rod can be screwed together for affected areas that are further out of reach.
NB: Ensure when twisting the rods to release the blocked material, you do so in a clockwise manner, which will prevent the rods from unscrewing during use.
Push the rod through the drain until you reach a blockage. At this point, force the drain rod through the blockage, to loosen up the dirt and residue in the pipe. This may require varying amounts of physical effort, depending on the severity of the blockage.Push the rod through the drain until you reach a blockage. For any loosened debris, wash away with water to clear up the pipe.
More awkward pipes, that have bends or are at gulley junctions, you will require a manual drain cleaner. Start by inserting the cutting head of the tool into the blocked drain and start unwinding the metal tubing until it reaches the blockage. Continue to push against the blocked area, until the machine loosens and removes the blocked material.
For other tough blockages, a petrol powered jet hose may be ideal for the situation. This high pressure jet allows for clearage of debris up to 90 metres away, which is an ideal solution to more difficult drain blockage problems.
