Tool hire users 'choosing home improvements over moving out'

Rather than buy a new home, almost eight in ten people are opting to stay put and carry out home improvements instead.

Another 17 per cent opt to increase the value of a property by getting the power tools out, even if they have no plans to sell, Money Watch has reported.

This is according to a new report by ServiceMagic, which noted some of the most popular projects undertaken from May to July of this year were kitchen remodelling, up 93 per cent following a 191 per cent increase in the first quarter, and a 20 per cent jump in cabinets being fitted.

However, not all tasks have seen an increase, though, with the most badly hit being paving, with a fall of 45 per cent, and fitting garages to a home, with more than three in ten more choosing to avoid this now than the start of the year.

DIY blogger Ilyce Glink said: "It is interesting to see what people will sacrifice when times get tough. It is also interesting to see what they cannot live without."

Key trends emerging in kitchen work includes keeping a natural colour, as well as keeping a surface free of appliances wherever possible, News Community Media has reported.
