Eye injuries from DIY 'affecting 30,000 a year'

Safety equipment for the eyes is being ignored by nine out of ten DIYers when they carry out home improvements.
This is according to the College of Optometrists, which feels that this figure is far too high and warnings must be heeded to prevent injuries in the home, the Yorkshire Post has reported.
Eye injuries relating to DIY work are actually at around 30,000 per year, highlighting the problems that many tool hire users are choosing to ignore.
This part of the body can easily be damaged by doing numerous jobs, from larger tasks like carpentry and laying insulation to everyday jobs like hammering a wall or painting a ceiling.
Dr Susan Blakeney, optometric advisor at the college, urges DIYers to put on some safety goggles when working on anything that could make materials fly up into the eye, including metal, wooden and concrete.
She said: "You only have one pair of eyes, so it is vital to protect them when undertaking certain DIY tasks."
The warning comes soon after Professional Power Tool Guide reported that many DIY injuries occur because people fall into a comfort zone, which then puts them in danger.
