Power tool work 'needs to be carried out on third of over-50s' homes'

Home improvement projects are needed to be done to more than a third of properties occupied by over-50s.

However, half of this age group have admitted that they would need to dip into their savings funds in order to pay for the cost of the DIY work, while 15 per cent say they cannot afford the costs at all.

This is according to new research by Saga Finance, which points out that the main areas where DIY repairs are needed are roofing and for guttering and drainage work, with 16 and 13 per cent of over-50s saying they are in need of DIY for these parts of the home.

The reason behind these figures could be because retirement incomes need to be spread out over a longer period of time, as a result of longer life expectancy rates, according to Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman of Saga.

He said: "Many retirees find they need additional cash, whether it is to make every day life easier, fund house repairs, take the trip of a lifetime, or to contribute to care in later life."

In the first half of 2010, Sainsbury's Finance found that the amount of loans taken out to pay only for DIY work stands at 20 per cent.
