A damp patch on the wall or ceiling rarely looks urgent. It's a bit of discolouration, maybe a faint musty smell, nothing dramatic.
But leave it a few weeks and that same patch can spread through plaster, timber and floorboards.

Why it pays to catch damp early
Damp is one of those jobs that gets far more expensive the longer you leave it.
A patch that starts as a few centimetres of discolouration can, within a matter of weeks, spread into plaster, blown paint, warped floorboards and mould growth.
It's also a genuine health issue, not just a cosmetic one.
Government guidance sets out the health risks that damp and mould can pose in the home, and NHS inform notes that damp and mould can trigger allergies, breathing problems and skin irritation, particularly for children, older people and anyone with asthma.
That's reason enough to deal with a small patch now rather than wait and see.
The tell-tale signs: where damp shows up first
Damp doesn't always look the same twice, but it tends to follow a pattern depending on where it's found.
Here's what to look out for in the most common spots around the house.
Damp on walls and damp in walls
- A dark, often tide-marked patch that grows outwards from one point.
- Cold spots on an internal wall, or a powdery, crumbling finish to old paint or wallpaper, are both early giveaways.
Damp in ceilings
- Usually a yellow-brown stain, sometimes with a slight sag in the plaster. This is often linked to a leak above (a bath seal, guttering, or roof) rather than rising or penetrating damp from below.
Damp in floorboards
- Boards that feel slightly soft underfoot
- A musty smell from under the flooring, or gaps starting to open up as timber swells then shrinks again as it dries out unevenly.
Damp in the house generally
- Persistent condensation on windows
- A musty smell that doesn't shift with normal cleaning
- Mould appearing in corners and behind furniture. This is very often condensation damp, caused by poor ventilation rather than a structural fault.
Drying out a damp patch
Step 1: Confirm it with a moisture meter reading
Before you dry anything out, it's worth confirming what you're actually dealing with.
A moisture meter gives you a percentage reading rather than a guess, so you know whether you're dealing with a light surface patch or something that's soaked further into the material.
- Wood and floorboards: a reading of up to around 16% is normal, 16 to 20% is worth monitoring, and above 20% means active drying is needed.
- Plaster, brick and masonry: readings are read on a much lower scale, so treat anything the meter's manual flags as "wet" or "damp" as a signal to start drying, not to redecorate over.
- Take more than one reading: move outward from the visible patch so you know how far the moisture has actually spread before you position your drying kit.

Step 2: Localised drying with one air mover
For a single damp patch, one Carpet Dryer / Air Mover hired from HSS DIY is usually enough.

- Leave it running and re-check with the moisture meter every day rather than constantly, so you're not disturbing the area unnecessarily.
If there's any visible mould on the patch, wear a dust mask and a pair of disposable gloves while you work, since mould spores are easily disturbed by airflow.

Step 3: When one air mover isn't enough
A single air mover is built for a single patch, so you might find you have to step up your drying game.

Case study: catching a bathroom ceiling patch early
A homeowner noticed a small yellow-brown patch spreading across a bathroom ceiling, just below where an upstairs bath sat.
Rather than painting over it, they took a moisture meter reading directly on the patch and the surrounding plaster to see how far it had spread.
The centre of the patch read well into the "wet" range, but the plaster just 30cm away was close to normal, confirming it was a contained leak rather than a wider roof or condensation issue.
They resealed the bath first, then hired a single air mover.
They used the equipment for four hours over two days, opening the bathroom window each time to help the moisture escape.
A follow-up moisture meter reading on day three showed the patch back within a normal range, and a fresh coat of paint finished the job.
