Essential Gardening Tools

It can be easy to get overexcited as Spring hits, especially in the world of gardening. This can often involve going overboard when buying new gardening tools or equipment, which can be a costly process, so it’s important to carefully consider which tools you need to buy and what can be hired as and when it’s required. Buying unnecessary tools and equipment isn’t only not particularly budget friendly but it can cause you to become inundated with tools and equipment which will cause overcrowding in your shed or garage. Because of this, it is important to consider what tools are essential and which may be better being hired from time to time.

Garden Essentials

Gloves

One of the most important gardening accessories to have is a good pair of gardening gloves. Without a pair of gloves, gardening can be a prickly hobby to partake in so it’s key that you have the right pair of gloves. It is important that your gardening gloves are durable but not overly bulky if you’re going to be working with small seeds; it will make this difficult. Make sure the gloves are a good fit and water resistant as you want your hands to be comfortable.

Handheld Tools

Smaller handheld tools are generally ones which are worth purchasing, especially for the keen gardener. They are typically pretty easy to store and shouldn’t break the bank. There are various types of pruning shears and they each do different jobs and work better for different purposes. Trowels are the essential hand tool; they are extremely versatile and great for transplanting bedding plants and herbs. If possible, stainless steel trowels make a better investment as they are more durable and will last longer. Similarly, having a spade is also essential for the keen gardener. It makes digging holes for plants much simpler; they can be a pricey investment but will last you the rest of your gardening life if you get the right one. It is also important to invest in tools such as a leaf rake and a hoe.

Garden Hose

Having a garden hose is pretty important even if you aren’t an avid gardener. It makes watering plants much easier than having to fill up a watering can every time you need to water something. Water is the foundation of life in the garden and therefore extremely important. A hose will make your life much simpler; get one with an adjustable nozzle to help you control things such as water pressure and spray radius.

Garden Fork and Loppers

Loppers are a cutting tool similar to pruners, but with a long handle. They are used to trim hard to reach areas and thicker branches. Loppers come in the same styles as pruners and like pruners should be kept in good condition and sharpened regularly. Garden Forks are equally as essential; they can be used in a similar way to spades but are better at digging into loose soil and can easily turn soil.

Wheelbarrow

Wheelbarrows are extremely useful when gardening, it is an easy way of shifting soil, debris and plants as they can easily move hundreds of pounds at a time. There are different types of wheelbarrows which suit different people and different gardening needs. Make sure to store your wheelbarrow in a clean and dry place to prevent rust and help it last longer.

Garden Tools for Hire

Some larger pieces of equipment and gardening tools will be essential from time to time but as they are not in constant use and can take up a lot of space it can be worth hiring instead of buying. Tools for hire include things such as garden shredders and woodchippers, hedge trimmers and lawn mowers. Hiring your bigger gardening equipment will save you big purchases, space and maintenance.
