A 2019 report revealed that Brits spend more time getting their gardens ready for spring and summer than they do cleaning their house. This does make sense as the majority of us tend to spend a lot of time outside in our gardens throughout summer; however, unreliable British weather means we probably spend more time inside our house than out. The report, conducted by JD Williams, found that whilst 7 out of 10 people dedicate time to being in their garden doing all important gardening jobs, only 1 in 5 does a seasonal deep clean, more commonly known as the spring clean.
So, whilst the majority of Brits may be tending to their gardens rather than the inside of their homes we thought it important to encourage a good old spring clean and look at some of the things you could look to include in your deep clean. With more time being spent in our homes, now is the perfect time to get busy cleaning!
In addition to the usual deep cleaning jobs which are typically associated with the general spring clean there are a variety of other jobs you can get stuck into during the spring clean.
Before you start flipping all the mattresses in your house, make sure to check what your manufacturer recommends. Some mattresses are designed to only be slept on one side of. In this case you should look to give your mattress a good, deep clean. Many people don’t even think about cleaning their mattress however mattresses can become clogged with sweat, dead skin cells and dust mites if they are not regularly cleaned. Ideally mattresses should be cleaned, and flipped if required, every 6 months. Once you have stripped the bed, use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum to clean the mattress on both sides; leave the mattress to air out for a few hours before remaking it.
Generally, you should look to clean your oven at least once a month, to avoid such a big job when you do get around to it. However, we know that the majority of us most likely don’t clean the oven once a month so let’s take a look at how to give you oven a deep clean. Start by switching the oven off and the mains, removing all the racks and trays and soaking them in a washing up bowl. Using a dry brush, scrub off dried on food before spray the interior of the oven with cleaning product and leaving for the required amount of time; there are a variety of different oven cleaning products which are super strong and great for doing a deep clean. Once it has been left on for the desired time, scrub it off with a scourer. Clean the glass with a sponge; scourers are too harsh for glass and could scratch it. Now dry off the racks and place them back in the oven.
When you do your annual spring clean, consider it an opportunity to also do some of the small DIY jobs you may have been putting off. Keeping up to small jobs like this can help prevent bigger issues forming which could potentially cause you much bigger problems in the future. Paintwork can begin to crack over time, due to different factors including the use of central heating; touching up paint regularly can help prevent further damage which could see you having to call out a professional decorator.
Take this task outdoors as well, touch up the paint and sealant on your wooden structures such as fencing and sheds to prepare them for the summer.
Use your spring clean as an opportunity to complete that DIY project you’ve been putting off. Fancy sprucing up your flooring? Using a floor sander, you can renovate old floorboards, so it looks fresh and new. A great way to refresh your flooring if you already have exposed boards, or a new flooring project if you currently have carpet or laminate. The floor sander helps to remove imperfections, old finishes and most stains which will then leave the floor ready to varnished or polished and looking as good as new!
Lastly, whilst you’re getting stuck into your cleaning and DIY jobs why not have a rearrange of your furniture. You’d be surprised how just moving some items around can make your home feel like new.
