Carpet Cleaning Myths: Busted

There are so many carpet cleaning myths floating around that it’s hard to know what is true and what isn’t. When it comes to your carpet, you can’t afford to rely on faulty information. Using processes or tools incorrectly can permanently damage your carpet, ruining the look of any room in just an instant.

Carpeting is an investment that adds to the value of your home, makes spaces more comfortable for your family and enhances the design and style of your rooms. We’ve busted some of the most common carpet cleaning myths so you know the best ways to clean and care for your carpets.

Myth: “Carpet cleaning can replace regular vacuuming.”

Truth: Carpet cleaning deep cleans your carpet in a way vacuuming can’t. Carpet should be vacuumed on a regular basis to clean up crumbs, dirt, pet hair, dust and other debris. Vacuuming your carpet will help keep your carpet looking clean between deep carpet cleanings.

In fact, right before you use a hired carpet cleaner, you should vacuum the entire area thoroughly. This will pick up loose debris, making it easier for the carpet cleaner to do its job.

Myth: “Carpet cleaning ruins the original look of carpet, so don’t clean it unless absolutely necessary.”

Truth: Modern carpet cleaners, and cleaning chemicals, are completely safe to use on carpets. They are designed to firmly but gently reach down between the fibres of your carpet to clean them completely.

In fact, one of the best ways to keep your carpet looking like new is to clean it on a regular basis. When you use a cleaner on your carpets, you will be amazed at how clean and new they look, even in high-traffic areas.

It’s a good idea to test a carpet cleaner and product on an inconspicuous spot to make sure it won’t negatively affect your carpet before you clean an entire room. In most cases, you won’t have any difficulty, but this is a best practice you should adopt.

Myth: “Carpet should rarely be cleaned with a high-powered cleaner.”

Truth: Carpet should be cleaned on a regular basis. The misconception that powerful cleaners somehow damage or wear out carpets is not true. When you hire a professional-grade carpet cleaner, you can rest assured that it won’t wear down your carpet. Carpet cleaners do the opposite, they help rid carpets of the effects of lots of wear and use, making them look fresh, clean and new again.

Myth: “You only need to clean your carpet if you can see stains.”

Truth: Even if you can’t see stains in your carpet, it still needs to be cleaned on a regular basis. While a carpet cleaner can help you remove stains, it does much more than that. It cleans deep down in your carpet where debris has settled and even become trampled into the fibres.

Another reason to clean your carpet even if it looks clean is to rid it of dust, pollen and pet hair that can irritate allergies. These things can’t always be seen, but they are there, no matter how many times you vacuum.

Myth: “All carpet cleaning processes are the same.”

Truth: It may seem like all carpet cleaners and processes are the same, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. There are actually a few different kinds of cleaning processes and using the right one is important.

Steer clear of cleaners that use dry methods that allow chemicals to dry in your carpet or use dry materials to clean it. These methods aren’t very effective and can actually cause damage. Instead, look for a cleaner that injects liquid into your carpet, cleans the fibres and then sucks the moisture back out, leaving your carpet as dry as possible. Always make sure the carpet cleaner you hire is top-quality, designed for your type of carpet and has the best features.

Myth: “Regular carpet cleaning will shrink my carpet, ruining it forever.”

Truth: Unless you leave your carpet soaking wet when you’re done cleaning it, your carpet won’t shrink. Shrinkage is caused when extremely wet carpet is left to dry for a long period of time.

You can avoid this problem by making sure you dry your carpet thoroughly when you are done cleaning it or by hiring a carpet cleaner that dries the carpet as it works across the room.

Myth: “Carpet cleaning will promote the growth of mould and mildew.”

Truth: It’s true that carpet cleaning will make your carpet wet and moist, but it won’t promote the growth of mould or mildew. In fact, the chemicals you use will clean and sanitise your carpet, making it cleaner.

When you are done cleaning your carpet, dry it thoroughly so it doesn’t attract mould and mildew. The best way to do this is to use a carpet cleaner model that dries the carpet as you push it across the floor. This will also allow you to start using the carpet sooner, which makes carpet cleaning an easier task.

Carpet cleaning is a necessary part of maintaining carpeting, and when done properly, is a safe and healthy way to keep your floors looking like new. Some of these myths simply aren’t true, and some describe negative effects that you can easily avoid.

No matter what kind of carpet you have or what kind of cleaner you use, it’s always wise to read the instructions that came with both the machine and the cleaning products. Carpet cleaner manufactures will include instructions on how to prepare the machine, use it safely and correctly and how to avoid problems.

Cleaning chemicals are generally labeled with specific instructions and warnings. Some chemicals shouldn’t be used on specific types of carpet, so be sure to get the right type for your carpet. Before you use a cleaner or chemical on an entire room, test them both in a hidden spot to make sure it won’t damage your carpet and that everything is working properly.
