A Guide to Tending your Bedding Plants

In the world of gardening, bedding is the temporary, fast growing plants which are placed into flower beds seasonally to create colourful displays throughout the year. Because of the seasonal traditions related to bedding plants, the plants used tend to be annuals and biennials. Bedding plants add instant colour and can transform your garden instantly. Because bedding plants tend to be shorter blooming flowers than others in your garden, they generally need a lot of care and attention, so it is important you know how to do this. For this purpose, we have put together this handy guide to tending your bedding plants.

Positioning

Where you decide to position bedding plants will play a big role in their survival. Certain flowers bloom and survive better where they get a lot of sun whereas others thrive more successfully when they are in the shade. It is important to ensure that when starting new flower beds, you have also correctly prepared the ground in order to get the most out of your garden. You can do this with various gardening equipment, which will help to make sure you give your flower beds the best start possible.

Watering

Before you even plant your bedding plants, you need to water them. You can submerge the whole pot in a bucket of water to soak for a couple of minutes before planting to ensure it is fully watered. It is then important to water bedding plants everyday as it is unlikely rainwater reaches them.

Food

Bedding plants need feeding in order to yield the best results throughout the season. You need to make sure your plants are getting the necessary nutrients in order for them to flourish. Tomato feed is a good food for flowers and can be applied once a week.

Deadheading

In order to avoid your flowers wasting their energy it is important to pick off dead flower heads. This also helps to keep your bedding plants look fresh and healthy all season long. Not all bedding plants need deadheading, some will shed petals by themselves but even then, it is a good idea to give them a brush over to make sure they are looking their best.
