Why is dust a problem?
In the construction industry, dust is generated from a number of common materials such as concrete, mortar and stone. When these materials are cut, drilled, or broken down in any way, they release fine inhalable particles known as Respirable Crystalline Sillica (RCS).
Breathing in RCS can cause harmful and life threatening diseases, such as Silicosis and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) which increases the risk of lung infections, causing difficulty in breathing and poor quality of life. Each year thousands of construction workers are seriously affected or even killed due to the effects of breathing in dust.
High dust levels can also cause issues with visibility in the working environment, as well as being time consuming to clean up once the job is finished.
What is the legal requirement?
Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) employers must control risks to employees’ health arising from work activities, meaning that they need to ensure exposure to dust is kept below the Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs).
How can HSS help you?
HSS offer a range of products that help reduce the potential exposure to dust, including M Class Dust extractors, wall cutters, diamond drilling, water suppression containers, cartridge hammers and dust boot attachments for drilling, breaking and grinding tools.
M Class Dust Extracting Machines
Dust extraction machines filter potentially harmful dust away from your working area as soon as it’s generated, ensuring that your employees are working in a safe environment. Dust extractors are available for all sizes and types of tools, and HSS can help you choose the best model for your work.
The HSE recommends M or H Class; however M Class is more suitable for construction site applications as it effectively removes mineral and wood dust, which is why all our extractors are M Class.
Dust Removal Systems
These are adaptors and connectors that join the power tool to the dust extraction machine, and they’re critical to ensuring effective dust extraction and compliance with legal dust exposure limits. HSS can advise you on the right solutions to your application depending on the type of task you’re working on, be it grinding, chasing, cutting, or breaking.
