Fan in home office.

The sun has got his hat on but sometimes, it can make our homes feel far too hot.

Being uncomfortable whilst at home because of the hot weather is not fun nor is it the best way we want to spend our time.

Take a look at our tips & advice on how to keep cool at home during the hot weather.

Top tips for keeping you & your home cool

Portable AC units & fans

Wouldn't it be great if we could feel a gentle sea breeze in the warmer months to cool us down? Well, unfortunately you won't get that in the suburbs, so we'll need the next best thing.

If you don't have AC installed in your home, why not buy or hire a portable option. Because you'll be able to move them around, you can place the AC unit or fan in anywhere in your home.

At HSS DIY, we have a wide range of portable AC units & fans to help keep your home cool in hot weather.

Dress for the weather

One of the easiest ways to keep cool in your home is to dressing for the heat.

Avoid layers, heavy clothes, dark colours and tight-fitting items. All these types of clothing will do is make you feel warmer.

Instead, go with shorts, capris, t-shirts, sandals, light colours & breathable materials like cotton or linen.

Going to spend some time in the garden? We don't blame you but don’t forget to protect yourself from the sun! Wear a hat when you plan to be outside for long periods of time and keep sunscreen handy.

Keep windows & doors shut

As tempting as it may seem, opening your windows & doors isn't always the best idea.

When you open the windows & doors, you allow the cool air in your home out and invite the hot air in.

Instead, keep them closed. If it's too hot in your home, you won't feel the benefits of any cooling units you may have in your home.

Avoid direct sunlight through windows

Whenever possible, use blinds or curtains to prevent direct sunlight from coming through your windows.

You don't have to keep your windows covered all day. We'd recommend to keep the covered during the hottest times of the day. Use a window covering that is easy to open and close so you can easily adjust it as the sunlight changes.

When sunlight enters your home directly through windows, it causes the temperatures to spike. As this happens your fans or air con will run more to keep your home cool, potentially causing your utility bills will go up.

Stay hydrated

How many times did we hear our parents telling us to drink more when we were in the sunshine? Plenty right?! And with good reason.

Drinking water often will keep you hydrated & cool whilst at home during the hot weather.

Staying hydrated also helps prevent headaches caused by the heat too.

Be mindful of hot appliances

As the temperatures reach record levels, we definitely do not want to be adding it.

Using kitchen appliances like your cooker, oven & dryer can make your home hotter in the warmer weather.

Try prepping meals that don't require the big kitchen gadgets or why not take it outside and have a beloved BBQ instead. When it comes to the dryer, it might be best to wait until the temperatures are cooler in the evening. Or better still, stick your clothes to dry on the washing line and make the most of the sunshine.

Pick the right bedding

There's nothing more uncomfortable than being in bed when it's too hot!

The tossing & turning will only add to the additional heat you're feeling and you might find falling asleep difficult.

Just like the clothes you wear during the day, your bedding is just as important. Switch any thick materials for thinner ones that will keep you cool. The same goes for you pyjamas too.

Keeping cool at home during the hot weather is easier than you think

Sometimes the heat can make us feel like prisoners in our homes but it really doesn't have to be that way.

By making simple changes or buying certain appliances, you can make life at home more comfortable when the temperatures are scorching.

Consider buying portable AC units or fans, using window screens, wearing breathable clothing materials and staying hydrated to keep you cool at home during the hot weather.
