It's October!
We're well in to autumn now & we can see the seasons have well & truly changed.
Beautiful colours can be seen from fallen leaves, to a crisp frost starting to form on the ground.
This month is also important for gardening activity too!
Here are some October gardening jobs for you to do that can prepare your outdoor area for the rest of the season.
Get some last minute lawncare in
It's no secret, winter in the UK can be a long, cold rainy season.
Because of the upcoming weather change, it might make it difficult for you to look after your garden.
So we're going to need to prep early.
October is the perfect time to do some last minute lawncare.
Scarifying your lawn should be done during the spring and autumn seasons.
The process involves removing the excess material that has gathered on your lawn, to allow it to breathe & grow better.
By getting the scarifier out in October means you're giving your lawn a fighting chance to be able to deal with the harsh weather that's approaching.
If you don't have your own, you can hire a lawn scarifier at HSS today & check out our blog post How to Scarify a Lawn if you're unsure how to do it.
Trim the hedges
During the summer months, your hedges will have grown thanks to the lovely hot weather.
Now the weather is about to get wetter throughout the autumn & winter months, it might be difficult to tend to them & get them looking good again.
Before the cold snap arrives, give your hedges a tidy & remove any dead branches so that they can continue to grown healthily.
You'll find a variety of hedge trimmers to buy as well as hedge shears.
Make use of the greenhouse
You'll want to make sure your plants will be able to survive through the cold when it comes.
You've put too much work into getting your plants growing and healthy so we're not going to let anything destroy them now.
In October, start moving your more tender plants like dahlias, fuchsias & cannas inside your greenhouse to prevent any damage over winter.
Depending on what type of plants you have in your greenhouse, you might need to set up an electric heater to avoid the effects of an early frost.
Don't forget to feed the plants
Now you've got your outdoor plants inside away from the elements, make sure you're keeping your indoor plants growing strong too.
Once a week in October and for the rest of autumn, top them up with some liquid fertiliser.
Doing this will give them the nutrients they need to continue to grow healthier in the colder weather.
Sow your fruits & veggies
If you have a fruit or vegetable garden or are thinking about starting one, October is a great time to sow some seeds.
Produce will need time to grow and you'll need to get certain fruits & veggies planted for them to harvest in time for the following year.
In October, you can plant:
- Beans
- Peas
- Onions
- Cauliflower
- Apples
- Pears
- Blackberries & much more
For any root veggies you have already have planted, you can protect them by covering them with mulch so that they're protected from frost.
October is also a great time to add any extra nutrients to your soil & removing any debris so that your fruit and veggies can thrive during the colder months.
We have a wide range of garden hand tools that can help you sort out your fruit & vegetable garden.
