With summer bowing out and autumn on it's way, your gardening jobs are ready to change again to adapt to the upcoming cooler weather.
But what has this new month got in store for us when it comes to gardening?
Here are some gardening jobs you can get on with in September.
Keep your lawn healthy
Taking care of your lawn is an around the year job if you want to keep it healthy and thriving.
During September, your lawn's growth will start to slow down & will need a little extra help in the colder months
Before you pull out the lawnmower & give the lawn a trim, make sure to raise the height of the lawnmower blades.
Why? you ask. Well, by raising the blades, you:
- help the grass to keep its nutrients through the colder months
- protects the grass from the harsh weather
- prevent moss growing over your lawn
If you want your lawn to look its best throughout autumn and winter, we'd suggest you don't skip your lawn maintenance.
You can also add some feed & seed to your lawn for some extra added goodness throughout the colder seasons.

Rake it in!
Autumn is here and with it comes falling leaves. (A lot of falling leaves). Which brings us to our next September gardening job.
If you don't clear away leaves from your lawn, you risk it getting less light exposure which means the grass will soon turn yellow and no one wants that!
Do not worry them! Cleaning up fallen leaves couldn't be easier.
Grab a rake and start making a pile of leaves.
With the tool's long handle and prongs, you'll be able to collect the leaves quickly.
Rather use a garden tool that's battery powered to do your leaf clean up? Why not use a leaf blower instead.
Leaf blowers are perfect for clearing leaves and other debris in larger areas, saving you loads of time and effort.
Create your own compost
Whilst you're gathering those fallen leaves, why not put them in a bin to create your own compost.
Not only is this a great way to recycle & reuse the leaves but your compost will be full of nutrients - great for your plants and lawn.
To make your compost, you can use old hedge trimmings, fading flowers, old paper, cardboard & even veggie peels from your food waste.
You can even use it as mulch, so you can help soil around your plants retain it's moisture & stop it from being waterlogged when the rain eventually comes.
Another September gardening job ticked off the list!
Plant some bulbs
September is the perfect time to plant some flowers so why not think ahead & plan for a pop of colour in your garden.
Daffodils, tulips & bluebells can all bloom in time for winter & spring, if planted at the right time.
You can plant bulbs in garden beds or in planting pots & containers.
Just make sure when using a pot or container, your soil has good drainage or else you risk your bulbs rotting from too much water.
We have a wide range of gardening tools available for you to check out online.
Whether you need a bulb planter, planting trowel, a hand fork or even gardening gloves, HSS DIY has all you need to help you plant bulbs in your garden.
Let there be light
Over the summer, you might have put up some sort of protection in your greenhouse to keep your plants & flowers from getting damaged by the heat.
As the temperatures start to dip and the sun starts to disappear earlier, your next September gardening job will involve you taking down any shades that you've put up.
Remove any shading paints, sheets or blinds from the windows & doors so your flora can get enough sunlight in the upcoming darker months.
Protect your pond
If you're lucky enough to have a pond in your back garden, you'll need to be looking after it all year round.
In September, try adding a net to the top of your pond to stop leaves and other debris from falling in to the water.
Not only will it help keep the water clean but you'll also keep animals and wildlife in your pond safe too.
