Shifting a Tree Stump

When you are left with a tree stump as the result of a fallen or felled tree, it should be removed to prevent rotting of the roots. Many people think the removal of a tree stump is a difficult job and therefore tend to put it off, however the sooner you tend to the leftover tree stump the less problems you are likely to have with suckering and fungal rot. Tree stumps can be removed in different ways – from using the right equipment such as a stump grinder, to removing with weedkiller.

Physically Removing a Tree Stump

Physically removing the tree stump is the best solution, ideally it should be removed completely but there are alternative methods of treatment which also offer results.

When physically removing a tree stump it is best for there to be a good-sized stub on the stump rather than having it cut to ground level – so bear this in mind.

For Smaller Trees

When it comes to smaller tress that have been cut down, a winch can be used to pull them out but this should only be done by someone with the knowledge of how to use one safely and correctly such as a professional gardener.

Larger Tree Stumps

You can either use hand tools such as a spade or a mini excavator to remove the majority of the root system. Mini excavators will help make the task a little easier, and landscapers will likely be skilled in the removal of stumps, but you can hire an excavator separately regardless.

Another removal tool which is useful is a stump grinder. These machines are designed to mechanically grind out the main root plate. Stump grinders are able to effectively grind the tree stump down to a fine sawdust and barely leave any root behind, anything left behind will naturally rot away. It is important to remember stump grinders can be a hazardous tool and therefore should only be used by those confident they can use one safely, such as a professional gardener.

Applying a Stump Killer

There are a variety of tree stump and weedkillers on the market which can effectively remove a stump – you can choose from a range of different types. If you’re looking to use a stump killer rather than a physical removal method you should ideally apply it in autumn/winter and it should be applied directly to the stump when it is as fresh as possible. When it comes to using a stump killer make sure to follow the manufacturer’s preferred method.
