You can either use hand tools such as a spade or a mini excavator to remove the majority of the root system. Mini excavators will help make the task a little easier, and landscapers will likely be skilled in the removal of stumps, but you can hire an excavator separately regardless.

Another removal tool which is useful is a stump grinder. These machines are designed to mechanically grind out the main root plate. Stump grinders are able to effectively grind the tree stump down to a fine sawdust and barely leave any root behind, anything left behind will naturally rot away. It is important to remember stump grinders can be a hazardous tool and therefore should only be used by those confident they can use one safely, such as a professional gardener.

Applying a Stump Killer

There are a variety of tree stump and weedkillers on the market which can effectively remove a stump – you can choose from a range of different types. If you’re looking to use a stump killer rather than a physical removal method you should ideally apply it in autumn/winter and it should be applied directly to the stump when it is as fresh as possible. When it comes to using a stump killer make sure to follow the manufacturer’s preferred method.
