About Us
HSS has been a trusted name in the tool business for some time. If you’ve ever hired a cement mixer, borrowed a breaker for a weekend, or stood in a queue holding a bag of sharp sand, there is a fair chance it came from us.
Whilst our name has changed, our mission is still the same. We hire out the tools, we sell the materials and get your order to you as & when you need it. Same website, same basket, except there’s no running around.
We’re the home of great projects, and we have been at it a while.
What do we have to offer?
We hire. Breakers, mixers, generators, floor sanders, wallpaper strippers, dumpers, the lot. Kit that is too expensive, too heavy or too rarely needed to own. You have it for as long as the job takes, then it goes back and stops being your problem.
We sell. Timber, cement, aggregates, insulation, fixings, workwear, safety gear and the hundred small things that turn up on a shopping list halfway through a Saturday.

We’re DIY enthusiasts who love helping our customers. We want to make sure you have the right tools and equipment for your projects, instead of you wasting your time getting the wrong ones.
We are good at getting the right kit to the right doorstep, and knowing the difference between the tool you asked for and the tool the job needs.
We also know that most people hiring from us aren’t professionals. They’re newbies having a go and they would quite like someone to tell them straight whether this is a one person job. So we try to write like that too with our handy DIY blogs. Some even have helpful instructional videos to make using equipment easier.
Our founding story
We started in 1957 as The Hire Service Shop, founded by Bert Taylor out of a shop on Baron’s Court Road in Kensington, London. One shop, a modest pile of tools, and the reasonable observation that most people need a concrete mixer roughly once in their lives.
That grew into HSS, and HSS grew into the business you are looking at now. What has not changed in nearly seventy years is the basic job: Somebody has a project, we have the kit.

We’ve been around since 1957. That’s when the business started. That’s long enough to have kitted out your street, your builder, and quite possibly your nan’s conservatory.
You’ll find a nationwide network of hire and supply partners, so most of the country is a short drive or a next-day delivery away.
For over 60 years of people asking us for a Kango when they mean an electric breaker. We answer to both.
What people ask us
Do I need to be a tradesperson to hire from you?
Absolutely not! A large chunk of what goes out our doors goes to people doing up their own homes. Nobody will ask to see a qualification.
Can I hire and buy in the same order?
You sure can. Add tools and materials to one basket and then check out once. If your order has several items, however, they may arrive separately.
How do I know what size or type I need?

Believe it or not, a hovercraft. Yes, you read that right! We don’t have it on our product list anymore though.
