rain drops on the window

When the inevitable British wet weather arrives and wreaks havoc on our gardens, our precious plants and flowers are going to need saving.

But do we actually know how to protect them?

Discover how to keep your garden protected in wet weather & what tools & accessories you'll need.

Cover up

Tarpaulin is great for protecting your garden from the wet weather due to its heavy duty & waterproof design.

You can use tarp to cover:

Plants

Too much rain can cause waterlogging but putting up a tarpaulin over your plants can help prevent that from happening.

Garden furniture

Some of won't have a shed or a garage to store our garden furniture inside during a wet day.

Luckily tarpaulin can stop them from getting damaged by the rain.

All you have to do is get your table and chairs together, cover with the tarp and secure it down.

Got a BBQ's or garden tools in the garden? Don't be shy, stick them under as well!

You can put numerous garden items under a tarp to protect them from the wet weather.

You also aren't limited to using the tarpaulin during wet days either!

As they are sturdy & tear resistant, you can use the covers when there's snow, high winds & even when it's a bit too sunny.

At HSS DIY, you'll find a range of tarpaulin to buy, that are available in different sizes. So you should find something that suits your needs.

Get mulchin'

We all know that when it rains in the UK, it pours!

And when it does, our plants suffer.

But we have something that can help. Some good ol' mulch.

"What's so great about mulch?" we hear you say.

Well, mulch acts as a sponge and soaks up any excess water around your plants.

It allows the rain water to seep into the soil slowly so whatever you have planted won't get too much water at one time.

Top tip - using a heavier mulch means it can absorb and hold more water and won't be able to wash away like lighter mulches.

Decking

Decking and wet weather do not mix!

When it rains, it can cause our deck areas to be come slippery & can damage the timber.

But fear not! HSS DIY is here to help keep your decking looking its best no matter the time of year.

We have a range of oils, stains, preservers & treatments to apply to your timber decking to add a waterproof layer of protection.

If left uncoated, you risk your decking rotting, becoming mouldy, splitting & more which all reduce its longevity. We do not want that!

You can also lay our trusted tarp to cover your decking but only use it short term.

Got gutters?

Just like your homes, garden sheds need a good guttering system too.

Having gutters around your shed or garage means that rain water has somewhere to go instead of down the sides of walls, causing rotting or structural damage.

Before the wet weather arrives, have a look and see if you have any on your outdoor buildings.

If not, HSS DIY has a range of guttering you can buy to add wherever it's needed around your garden.

If you already have guttering around your garden buildings, check it's condition. Anything parts that are suffering from wear and tear might be worth replacing.

Loosen up your lawn

Lawn health is so important, no matter the time of year or the weather.

To help your lawns ability to absorb water, you'll need to aerate it. Aerating is a process that creates small holes in soil allowing air & water to enter more easily.

When the weather is wet, wet, wet, you may find your lawn waterlogs if it hasn't been looked after.

Stay dry whilst you're gardening in the rain

Garden projects can take time and unfortunately, we can't stop the rain from coming!

But just because it appears, it doesn't mean you need to run and hide inside.

We have a wide selection of waterproof clothing, such as waterproof jackets & waterproof trousers, that are perfect for keeping you dry when you're out doing your gardening jobs in the rain.

HSS DIY has all you need for protecting your garden in the wet weather

And just like that, you've learnt new ways to keep your garden protected when the weather changes and the rain is pouring.

It's important to look after our garden all year round, no matter the weather.

Whether you're using tarp to cover your garden furniture, adding a waterproof layer to your decking or aerating your lawn, there's so much you can do to make sure your garden isn't damaged from the rain.
