Once Winter has been & gone, it'll be the perfect time to do some much-needed spring cleaning. This will be a chance to sort through clutter & get rid of anything you might have gathered over time that you now don't need. It'll also be an opportunity to get organised and make improvements around your home.

Spring cleaning can be a big project but HSS have created a checklist that will help you move through the process quickly so you can enjoy a clean, organised home for the rest of the year.

Inside the House

The easiest way to tackle spring cleaning is to go from room to room so you can be sure you've gone through everything thoroughly. Have a look around and see what you have and decide what you want & don't want to keep. Pack away anything you're getting rid of in a box or a bin bag ready to be taken to the tip or to donate. Whatever you keep, reorganise your rooms to keep them neat and tidy and be sure to take advantage of all the storage space you have.

Once all that has been done, it'll be time to tackle some deep cleaning tasks that you probably don’t do on a regular basis.

Clean Out the Wardrobes

Over time clothes, shoes & accessories pile up in our wardrobes and drawers (and if you're anything like me, you wouldn't have worn half of it in a while) so why not take a look through what you have and throw away, sell or donate things you don’t need anymore. If you're unsure about where to donate your clothes to, there are plenty of charities that accept clothing. Simply take the bags to their nearest store or arrange a collection from your home online.

Wipe Down Skirting Boards

Your skirting boards collect dust and dirt regularly, especially in the entryway. Cleaning them is simple. Get some soapy water and use a cloth to wipe them down but make sure your cloth isn't too wet. This can be a big job, so it’s a good idea to take this one room by room instead of doing them all at once. It’s also best to do this before you clean your carpets so you can vacuum any dust that falls onto the carpet.

Clean the Carpets & Flooring

Give all your carpets and flooring a good vacuuming, making sure you clean areas that may not see the hoover regularly such as under furniture. After that, hire a carpet cleaner from HSS to give them a deeper clean. Spring is a great time to do your carpet and floor cleaning as they would have probably seen a lot of foot traffic over the winter months which would have brought in dirt & mud.

If you're unsure of how to deep clean your carpet, take a look at our dedicated article on how to get your carpets looking their best again.

Wash Bedding and Curtains

Now is a good time to wash any comforters, sheets, pillowcases and blankets in all the bedrooms, even if they haven't been used in a while. After that, take your curtains down and give them a wash them. Curtains collect a lot of dust so this is the best way to make them look fresh and clean. Be sure to take fragile drapes to the dry cleaner instead of washing them yourself.

Wipe Out Kitchen Cupboards

When was the last time you cleaned out your kitchen cupboards? Take an afternoon to empty out your cupboards & wipe out the crumbs and dust that have accumulated. Once that's all done, you can clean & organise your kitchen gadgets too.

Clean Your Windows and Doors

Grab a bucket of soapy water, a cloth or a window vac and give your windows a good clean from the inside. Your doors may need a wipe down also, so don't forget those.

The Garage

The garage is another area that can benefit from some spring cleaning projects. An organised garage is easier to use and can actually give you more storage space.

Remove Clutter

Just like you did inside, start by removing clutter in your garage. Take things out one at a time and add them to one of three piles: keep, donate and throw away. When you've sorted through everything, take everything from the keep pile back into the garage.

Sweep the Floors

Before you add things back to the garage, sweep the floors with a large broom that covers the entire floor. Take care of oil spills, broken shelves, loose knobs and any other damages you might find.

Install Shelves and Cupboards

One of the best ways to keep your garage organised is to install shelves and cupboards. Put up some shelves and then use storage boxes or plastic bins to keep things organised. You can also add a workbench and cupboards to your garage to create a workspace for storing your tools and other equipment.

The Garden

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to stop with your home. The spring months are the ideal time to do some cleaning in your garden so it will flourish and be enjoyed during the summer.

Clean the Garden

Start by removing dead plants, leaves, sticks and other debris that has found its way into your garden during the winter. Pull weeds, till the soil, trim hedges and make other preparations so that when the weather is warm enough, you can add new plants or sow seeds.

Clean & Repair Tools

Take this time to clean & repair your garden tools so that you're good to go when you're ready to start gardening again. Tools like rakes, hedge trimmers, shovels, lawn mowers, wheel barrows and other equipment take a lot of wear and tear so making necessary repairs each spring will keep them in good shape.

Paint and Repair Garden Features

Winter weather can take its toll on fences, trellises, water features, pathways and other garden features, so part of your spring cleaning plan should include making repairs to these too. A fresh coat of paint and other repairs can be all it takes to make your garden summer ready.

This spring cleaning checklist can vary for different people so you may want to add or swap out other jobs. Tasks such as dusting high ceilings, cleaning your windows, jet spraying your garden floor and much more can help with your annual spring clean. We hope this checklist can help get your home and garden clean & organised ready for the warmer months ahead.
