What is a laser level?
A laser level projects a beam of coloured light, typically red or green, onto a surface to create a perfectly straight horizontal or vertical reference line.
It's faster and more accurate than a traditional spirit level for larger jobs, and once set up, you can work from it anywhere in the room.
Most consumer and trade models are Class 2 lasers, which are safe for normal use. The Health and Safety Executive advises avoiding staring directly into the beam (see https://www.hse.gov.uk/radiation/optical/lasers.htm for full guidance), but for everyday DIY they're completely manageable.
Line, point, or rotary? Choosing the right laser level
Not all laser levels are the same. Picking the right type before you start will save a lot of head-scratching.
Line laser (cross-line laser)
A line laser projects a horizontal line, a vertical line, or both together as a cross.
It’s the most popular choice for indoor DIY projects like hanging pictures, fitting dado rails, tiling a feature wall, or positioning kitchen cabinets.
Compact, portable, and easy to set up.
Point laser (dot laser)
This type of laser projects individual reference dots rather than continuous lines.
It's used to transfer a level point from floor to ceiling or between opposite walls.
Useful for plumbing vertical positions, squaring off corners, or aligning stud positions when partitioning a room.
Rotary laser level
The big hitter. A rotary laser spins its beam 360 degrees, covering an entire room or outdoor space in one go.
It's the go-to for bigger jobs: laying a patio with a consistent drainage fall, setting out foundations, or levelling a large floor.

Understanding self-levelling
Most modern laser levels are self-levelling.
Place the unit on a surface and an internal pendulum or electronic sensor automatically compensates for small imperfections, producing a true horizontal or vertical beam with no manual fiddling required.
The key word is small. Most self-levelling lasers have a working range of roughly plus or minus 3 to 5 degrees.
Place the unit on a surface that's more out of level than that, and the laser will lock up or flash to warn you. On a tripod on a reasonably flat floor, this rarely causes problems.
If your laser does not have self-levelling, you'll need to manually adjust using the built-in bubble vials before starting. Give it a moment to settle before marking anything.
How to use a laser level: step by step
Step 1: Choose the right setup
Decide whether you need a floor-mounted, tripod-mounted, or wall-mounted setup.
For ceiling work or projecting across a large space, a tripod gives you the height and stability you need.
Step 2: Position the laser at the right height
If you're fitting shelving at a specific height, position the laser beam at that shelf height rather than at floor level.
Your reference line is then exactly where you need it, with no measuring up required.
Step 3: Switch on and let it settle
Turn the unit on and wait for the self-levelling to complete.
Most models indicate readiness with a solid, stable beam. A flashing beam means the unit is outside its levelling range — reposition it before continuing.
Step 4: Mark your reference points
Use a pencil to mark key positions along the laser line: the ends of shelf brackets, tile layout centres, or the base of a cabinet run.
You don't need to mark the entire line, just the points you'll fix to.
Step 5: Work from the line, not against it
Don't move the laser once you've started marking.
If you do need to reposition, take fresh reference marks before moving on. Even a fraction of a degree of drift across a four-metre run can move your endpoint by several centimetres.
Step 6: Double check before fixing
Before you drill, hold a tape measure against your marked points to confirm the dimensions match your plan.
The laser line is accurate, but it takes half a second to check, and it's always worth doing.
How long will it take to use a laser level?

Where to use a laser level around the home
Laser levels come into their own on a wide range of jobs. Here are the most common DIY applications:
- Shelving and storage: Getting a long run of shelves level is fiddly without one, especially across alcoves.
- Wall tiling: A cross-line laser gives you a constant vertical and horizontal reference, so grout lines stay consistent from first tile to last.
- Laying flooring: For screeded or tiled floors, a rotary laser helps identify high and low spots before you begin.
- Fitting kitchen units: Cabinet heights need to be consistent across a full wall run, often over uneven floors.
- Hanging dado rails or coving: A horizontal line across an entire room takes seconds to project.
- Decking and patios: A rotary laser helps you maintain a consistent drainage fall (typically around 1:80 in the UK) across the full area.

Health and safety: working with laser levels
Most DIY laser levels are Class 2, which means they're safe for accidental exposure since your eye's natural blink reflex provides enough protection. A few sensible precautions are still worth following:
- Never look directly into the beam, and keep it away from children.
- Avoid pointing the laser at reflective surfaces such as mirrors or glossy tiles at eye height.
- When using a rotary laser outdoors, be aware the beam may be visible at a considerable distance. Never direct it towards roads or aircraft flight paths.

Case study: kitchen refit, north of England

Consumer and mid-range professional laser levels are typically accurate to plus or minus 1mm over 10 metres.
For most DIY tasks that's more than good enough.
Rotary lasers used for large-scale outdoor work, such as the Hilti PR 300-HV2S, offer higher precision still.
What's the difference between a red and a green laser beam?
Green beams are roughly four times more visible to the human eye than red under the same conditions.
For bright indoor spaces or any outdoor use, green is easier to see without a detector.
Can a laser level replace a spirit level entirely?
For large or complex jobs, yes.
For small tasks like checking whether a single shelf bracket is plumb, a spirit level is quicker and perfectly adequate.
The two tools work well alongside each other.
What does a flashing laser beam mean?
On most self-levelling models, a flashing beam means the unit is outside its automatic levelling range.
The surface it's sitting on is too unlevel for the mechanism to compensate.
