The festive season has passed us by and now the new year is here, everyone is starting to clean up and take down the Christmas decorations in our home and local areas.
Taking down Christmas lights requires a lot of work, especially in towns and cities where the lights are positioned at height.
In this blog, we will discuss how you can safely take down Christmas lights in your local town.
Risks
There are many risks associated with working at height and it is essential that before you get to work, you assess all the risks.
- Firstly, it's important that workers perform an in-depth risk assessment before starting working to make sure everything is planned and all risks are accounted for. The last thing anyone wants is an accident to happen because someone didn't identify a potential risk.
- Next, everyone involved will need to complete a relevant working at height training course to ensure they are understand how to work safely at a height to keep themselves and others out of harm's way.
- Before the job starts, you'll also need to know if the weather is safe to work in and that you have the right access equipment too.
Equipment Hire
There are various types of access equipment for working at height, all of which can serve different purposes and be suited to specific jobs.
Boom Lifts
When working in town and city centres to remove Christmas lights and decorations, boom lifts and cherry pickers are usually the most suitable piece of equipment as they can safely reach high points where we'd usually find decorations hanging.
Access Towers
If the area you are working in has trees or is near a wooded area, using access towers would be recommended. Access towers can be used in almost any environment and provide a stable platform to work from. As they are extremely robust it means they are the best option for wooded areas.
Low Level Access
Low level access platforms and power towers are good for removing decorations and lights from lower heights or from the fronts of buildings. They are also able to be used indoors which makes them great for use in retail locations, markets, or office buildings.
Ladders and Steps
For less hazardous working environments or for removing decorations from the fronts of houses or shops, ladders and steps are a good option. You can also use low level access towers too as they offer a safer solution without causing obstruction in some areas.
