How to fit a shelving system in any room: walls, alcoves and studios
A shelf that slopes, wobbles or pulls out of the wall six months later is a DIY rite of passage most of us would rather skip.
The good news: fitting a shelving system properly, whether it's going into a wall, an alcove or a studio, comes down to a handful of steps anyone can follow.

Fitting a shelving system in studios
Studios tend to need shelving that works harder than the average living room shelf. Space is limited in a studio so fitting a shelving system means prioritising space. You’ll also need something strong and flexible over a polished finish.
- Check the wall build-up. Timber-framed garden studios and converted outbuildings often have thinner internal linings than a house wall, so locating the actual timber frame with a stud detector matters even more here.
- Go for a heavy-duty bracket shelf. A reinforced shelf bracket is a better match than a concealed floating fixing for anything holding tools, jars of screws or stacked storage boxes.
- Space brackets to the load, not just the shelf length. As a rule of thumb, a bracket every 400–500mm keeps a heavily loaded shelf from sagging in the middle over time.
Choosing the right shelving system for your space
Before any drilling starts, it's worth thinking about what the shelf actually needs to do.
A floating shelf above a desk holding a few paperbacks has very different demands to a garage studio shelf loaded with paint tins and tool boxes.
Here are the 3 main shelving types:
- Floating shelves – more for small, light objects like books, candles, small picture frames, small plants etc. Fix them with concealed brackets or rods so the wall does the visible work. Neat, but limited by wall type and weight.
- Bracket shelves – good for storing books, mugs, glassware, toiletries and more. The bracket is exposed under the shelf and spreads it’s load across two or more fixing points. It’s stronger and usually cheaper.
- Freestanding or track systems – best for heavier items such as potted plants, framed artwork, electronics and other household bits. Upright rails fixed to the wall with adjustable shelf brackets that clip in wherever you need them. Good for alcoves and studios where shelf height changes over time.
Whichever you pick, the fixing method matters more than the shelf itself. A beautiful oak shelf on the wrong wall plug will end up on the floor.
How to fit a shelving system in walls
Most shelving jobs start on a plain stretch of wall, so getting this method right pays off everywhere else in the house.
Here's how to fit a shelving system in walls step by step:
- Identify your wall type: Tap the wall - a dull thud usually means solid masonry (brick or block), while a hollow sound suggests plasterboard on a timber or metal stud frame. Each needs a different fixing.
- Find the studs, pipes and cables: Run a cable, pipe and stud detector across the area before you mark a single hole. Skipping this step is how DIYers end up in A&E, or without hot water.
- Mark and level the fixing points: Use a spirit level to draw a level line, then mark each bracket position with a pencil, checking the shelf itself sits square against the wall first.
- Drill the pilot holes: On masonry, a hammer drill with an SDS or masonry bit makes light work of brick and block; on a stud, a standard drill bit is plenty. You can hire a hammer drill from us if you don't already own one.
- Fit the right wall plug or fixing: Masonry needs a plastic or resin wall plug rated to the load; hollow plasterboard needs a proper cavity fixing (never just a screw) such as Rawlplug's plasterboard wall plugs.
- Attach the bracket, then the shelf: Tighten screws fully but don't overtighten into plasterboard, as this can crush the fixing and weaken the hold. Recheck level before loading it up.
Top tip: if you're fitting more than one shelf at the same height, such as a run of shelving above a desk, mark all the fixing points before you drill anything. It saves a lot of re-measuring.
Fitting a shelving system in alcoves
Alcoves either side of a chimney breast are one of the most requested shelving jobs in British homes. They turn dead space into proper storage or a built-in look without major building work.

Fitting a shelving system in alcoves has a few extra considerations because you're usually working with three fixing surfaces, not one.
- Measure both sides separately. Alcoves are rarely perfectly symmetrical. Measure width at the top, middle and bottom, and depth at both sides, before you cut or order any timber.
- Choose your fixing method for an alcove floating shelf. Because the shelf spans the gap and touches the side walls, you can often fix into the two side walls only, hiding the brackets or concealed rods so the shelf appears to float. This works well for lighter loads such as books, ornaments or a small TV box.
- Add a central support for wider alcoves. Where the gap is wider than around 900mm, or the shelf will carry real weight, add a bracket at the back wall as well, so the load is shared across three fixing points instead of two.
- Level side to side and front to back. Use a spirit level on both axes. A shelf that's level left-to-right but tilts forward will look fine empty and terrible once loaded.
- Finish the edges. Scribing the back and sides of the shelf to the wall (following the wall's own slight bumps and curves) gives a much neater, built-in finish than a straight-cut edge with visible gaps.
Weight guide: how much can your shelves hold?
Overloading is the single biggest cause of shelving failure, and it's rarely about the shelf itself; it's the fixing. As a general guide:

Drilling into walls, especially masonry, produces fine dust that shouldn't be breathed in.
The Health and Safety Executive advises using an FFP3-rated dust mask for jobs that create high dust levels, alongside eye protection and hearing protection when using a hammer drill for any length of time.
- Always scan for cables and pipes before drilling, even in walls you're confident are safe.
- Stock up on dust masks and gloves before you start; you don't want to stop mid-job for PPE.
- If you're working above shoulder height, use proper steps rather than balancing on furniture.
- Switch off power at the consumer unit if a detector flags a possible live cable, and get an electrician to check before you drill.
Case study: from cluttered alcove to clever storage
