As summer approaches and we start to experience warmer weather across the UK, it is important to consider how to stay cool during work as many of us are not in the workplace and are instead working from home. Whilst this does tend to bring with it some benefits in terms of wellbeing, it does mean you’re less likely to benefit from that freezing office air-conditioning or cooling system.
When working at home it is still important to keep cool and take precautions on a hot day; with the majority of UK homes lacking air conditioning, preventative measures are more important than ever. Let’s look at some of the ways to keep cool at home; from hiring a home cooling system to some small tricks to keep the heat down.
Keep curtains drawn
Keeping blinds and curtains drawn during the day, at least when the sun is shining the most, can help to keep the house cool. Sun shining in through a window can create a ‘greenhouse’ effect where the room will become especially hot. By keeping blinds and curtains closed, you can reduce this effect and keep the temperature lower. Depending on where your windows face, you may be able to have them open in either the morning or afternoon, once the sun has moved.
Open windows in the evening
You may be tempted to have the windows open constantly whilst the days are warm, however this can sometimes have the opposite effect. If the outside air is warm, and your house is actually cooler you will just be allowing hot air inside. Therefore, it is best to keep windows shut during the warmest hours which are generally throughout the afternoon. Instead, wait until the evening when the air is cooler and let as much cool air in as possible. This will help cool the house at night and into the next day.
Use a fan to make personal air-con
One of the first things many people do to keep cool at home is to purchase a standard electric fan. These are great for providing some relief from the heat however after a while they will simply be circulating hot air without any cooling agent. To make a sort of ‘homemade air-conditioning system’ try placing a bowl of ice in front of the fan to ensure the circulated air is cold.
One of the most important things to ensure you do in the heat is stay hydrated to avoid things such as heat exhaustion. Adults should be consuming about 10 glasses, or 2.7 litres, of water per day and during hot weather this should be slightly more. If you find yourself feeling sluggish in the heat, water could be exactly what your body needs.
Hire a domestic cooling system
If you feel you are really struggling with the heat in your home, it could be time to consider hiring a cooling system. Hiring the equipment may be the most cost-effective solution if you are only using it for a short period of time. From compact air conditioning units, to small cooling fans, you can keep cool at home by hiring a domestic cooling system.
