How to Paint a Fence
It may seem obvious, but you need to check if the fence you are planning to paint is yours. If it is your neighbour’s fence you may be wondering “can I paint my side of the fence
It’s that time of year again when your customers realise their yard more closely resembles the Amazon jungle than the perfectly trimmed lawn they closed their back door on last year. And even if they’re struggling to find their garden shed amongst the thick array of bushes, grass and weeds, this is pretty good news for the experienced, professional landscaper.
During the months of March and April it’s all about preparation for late Spring and early Summer; which usually requires a bit of deep digging. For clients with larger gardens or mid-sized plots, powerful petrol machines with good blades such as HSS’s Power Digger (Rotavator) will be able to dig deep into the ground; and compared with hand held tools such as spades or trowels, or even cultivators; rotavators are also a good choice for preparing soil which is relatively free of weeds. If it’s weeds that you need to tackle though, the Triple Head Flame Gun is perfect for the job!
If it’s too soon to start digging and you need to free the ground from moss and other straggly lateral growth beforehand, a lawn scarifier could do just the trick. Debris which has built up over the Winter months will be raked up and collected to achieve a professional finish, promoting new and healthy lawn growth.
For the more unusual jobs such as stump grinding which can be hard to do to a high standard without causing damage, you’ll want to get your hands on the right equipment. HSS’s Stump Chippers are ideal for grinding away small to large tree stumps and they provide maximum operator safety with their front mounted cutter wheels. By using a chipper you’ll also eliminate the need to burn, dig or treat tree stumps with chemicals. Reducing them to ground level and below will also allow for replanting or ground preparation for just about any purpose.
Quite often you’ll be hired to do the hard to reach jobs your customers don’t want to tackle themselves, so why not hire out our long-handled hedge trimmer and long-reach tree pruner to equip you for these tasks.
Buying your own seasonal equipment can be a significant investment and sometimes unreliable when kit fails. At HSS all of our gardening and landscaping equipment is fully maintained and safe to use and some even comes fully kitted out with Personal Protective Equipment to keep you and your team safe from harm. It’s also easy to transport so you can move from job to job without any hassle!

Using a sharp, clean pair of secateurs if you ensure to cut back and prune climbing and bush roses, they’ll stay healthy and bring strong growth in the summer. Trim winter damage from trees and shrubs, removing dead wood and shape plants to encourage healthy new growth. Cut back any remaining perennials to encourage new growth.
Take the time to go through any seed packets you already have and get them organised into different containers for the different times of year you’ll be sowing. You’ll need to start sowing indoors if there is still a chance of frost or use a greenhouse or cold frame with added insulation for outdoor sowing. Seeds such as cosmos or salvia can be started in a propagator or on a well-lit windowsill. You could even try sowing sweet peas into biodegradable toilet roll tubes; they grow long roots that like to be undisturbed so transplanting them straight out into a container when they are ready is ideal. If you are planning to sow outdoors, you can start to prepare your beds by adding a layer of fleece to warm the soil.
