Budget-Friendly Garden Updates

February 02nd 2024

Transforming your garden into a serene sanctuary doesn't have to cost the earth. Small, inexpensive changes can refresh your outdoor space, allowing you to create an inviting area perfect for relaxation and social gatherings. You can add a touch of your own personality with unique DIY creations or transform a tired fence with a fresh coat of stain. These budget-friendly garden update ideas will help you make the most of your outdoor space.

Garden Paint Ideas

You don’t need to be green fingered for this top tip. Whether on a fence, wooden garden furniture or garden wall, adding a bit of colour with outdoor paint will help to brighten up the grey UK skies. You could add little pops of bold colour to your potting table or add a new lease of life to your shed with a wood treatment. Or have a go at stencilling a pattern on your patio for a feature floor. Adding a bright colour on a wall will add a modern look, a vibrant backdrop for those evenings spent al fresco. If you are worried about going too bold, you can keep it muted but fresh with timeless shades of grey, green, and white.

Upcycled Planters Ideas

You can save a small fortune by making your own planters to add to patio areas, decking, edging, windowsills or seating area. Use items you already have at home such as tin cans with the labels removed and holes punched in the bottom, or you could make a hanging basket or planter from an old colander.

Speak to your local garden centre to see if they have any surplus pots going spare, or try local listings websites for cheap or free reclaimed materials such as pallets or used rubber tyres to make a raised bed. You could even add lining to a chipped Belfast sink and use it to grow some veg, or line the drawers of an old piece of furniture to add a feature to your garden. Get creative, get recycling, think outside the box!

Garden Lighting Ideas

There are so many options for lighting in the garden, but solar powered lights are not only more environmentally friendly than electric lights, but they are also quick and easy to install too with no need to worry about outdoor plugs and wiring. You could add overhead festoon lights to your fencing or pergola to create a cosy eating area. Try lighting up pathways with a line of stake lights, these even come with different colours and patterns for added effect. A battery-powered lantern can easily be moved around your outdoor space to wherever you want it, adding an instant burst of light. Flexible weatherproof LED strip lighting can add a point of interest to garden steps or along pathways, helping to add light to walkways.

Dig Out the Pressure Washer

One of the quickest ways to transform your garden is to jet wash it with a pressure washer. In a matter of hours, you can remove the build-up of algae and dirt and get your decking or paving looking like new again. Some pressure washers come with attachments for garden furniture too so you can tackle it at the same time as your pathways and patios.

Add Colour to Your Borders

Keep an eye out for special offers on gardening websites; some companies offer a “lucky dip” of perennial border plants where you don’t know exactly what you will get but it is sure to add colour and interest. Check out the sale or clearance sections in your local garden centre to pick up a bargain, just be sure to check the condition of the roots as this will tell you if a plant is salvageable or whether to return it to the shelf. Sometimes keen gardeners offer cuttings on local listings websites; you’ll be able to grow your own flowers, shrubs or trees and add more variety to your outside space.
