The Ultimate Spring Cleaning Checklist

Updated - January 4th 2024

Once Winter has been & gone, it'll be the perfect time to do some much needed spring cleaning. This will be a chance to sort through clutter & get rid of anything you might have gathered over time that you now don't need. It'll also be an opportunity to get organised and make improvements around your home.

Spring cleaning can be a big project but HSS have created a checklist that will help you move through the process quickly so you can enjoy a clean, organised home for the rest of the year.

Inside the House

The easiest way to tackle spring cleaning is to go from room to room so you can be sure you've gone through everything thoroughly. Have a look around and see what you have and decide what you want & don't want to keep. Pack away anything you're getting rid of in a box or a bin bag ready to be taken to the tip or to donate. Whatever you keep, reorganise your rooms to keep them neat and tidy and be sure to take advantage of all the storage space you have.

Once all that has been done, it'll be time to tackle some deep cleaning tasks that you probably don’t do on a regular basis.

Clean Out the Wardrobes

Over time clothes, shoes & accessories pile up in our wardrobes and drawers (and if you're anything like me, you wouldn't have worn half of it in a while) so why not take a look through what you have and throw away, sell or donate things you don’t need anymore. If you're unsure about where to donate your clothes to, there are plenty of charities that accept clothing. Simply take the bags to their nearest store or arrange a collection from your home online.

Wipe Down Skirting Boards

Your skirting boards collect dust and dirt regularly, especially in the entryway. Cleaning them is simple. Get some soapy water and use a cloth to wipe them down but make sure your cloth isn't too wet. This can be a big job, so it’s a good idea to take this one room by room instead of doing them all at once. It’s also best to do this before you clean your carpets so you can vacuum any dust that falls on to the carpet.

Clean the Carpets & Flooring

Give all your carpets and flooring a good vacuuming, making sure you clean areas that may not see the hoover regularly such as under furniture. After that, hire a carpet cleaner from HSS to give them a deeper clean. Spring is a great time to do your carpet and floor cleaning as they would have probably seen a lot of foot traffic over the winter months which would have brought in dirt & mud.

Wash Bedding and Curtains

Now is a good time to wash any comforters, sheets, pillowcases and blankets in all the bedrooms, even if they haven't been used in a while. After that, take your curtains down and give them a wash them. Curtains collect a lot of dust so this is the best way to make them look fresh and clean. Be sure to take fragile drapes to the dry cleaner instead of washing them yourself.

Wipe Out Kitchen Cupboards

When was the last time you cleaned out your kitchen cupboards? Take an afternoon to empty out your cupboards & wipe out the crumbs and dust that has accumulated. Once that's all done, you can clean & organise your kitchen gadgets too.

Clean Your Windows and Doors

Grab a bucket of soapy water, a cloth or a window vac and give your windows a good clean from the inside. Your doors may need a wipe down also, so don't forget those.

Clean Out the Closets

If you’re like everyone else, things just keep piling up in your closets. After a year of adding things without organising them, your closets need a good clean out. Throw away or donate things you don’t need anymore and then implement organisation systems to keep everything else in check.

Wipe Down Baseboards

Your baseboards collect dust and even dirt, especially in the entryway. Use a damp cloth to wipe them down. This can be a large project, so it’s a good idea to take this one room by room. It’s also wise to do this before you clean the carpets in a room, so any dust that falls to the carpet will be removed with the carpet cleaner.

Clean the Carpets

Vacuum all your carpets and then hire a carpet cleaner to give them a good cleaning. Spring is a great time to do this because your carpets have probably taken a beating all winter as you tracked snow and mud inside.

Wash Bedding and Curtains

You may wash your bedding on a regular basis, but now is a good time to make sure you get to it. Wash comforters, sheets, pillowcases and blankets in all the bedrooms. Then, take the curtains down and wash them. Surprisingly, curtains collect a lot of dust and a good washing is the best way to make them look fresh and clean. Be sure to take fragile drapes to the dry cleaner instead of washing them yourself.

Wipe Out Kitchen Cupboards

When was the last time you cleaned out your kitchen cupboards? Take an afternoon to remove crumbs and dust and make your cupboards look like new. Remove all the dishes in the cupboards before you wipe them down, and then organise kitchen gadgets as you replace them.

Make General Repairs

As you clean, make a list of general repairs and then cross them off one by one. Fixing things like loose doorknobs, broken tiles, loose hinges, torn cushions and other small things can make a big difference in how a room looks.

As you do these spring-cleaning projects, you may notice other things that you can do to freshen up your rooms. Make note of these things and take on the tasks one by one and your home will be ready for summer before you know it.

The Garage

Your garage is another area that can benefit from some spring cleaning projects. An organised garage is easier to use and can give you more storage space.

Remove Clutter

Just like you did inside, start by removing clutter in your garage. Take things out one at a time and add them to one of three piles: 'keep', 'donate' and 'throw away'. Once you've sorted everything, get your keep pile organised.

Sweep the Floors

Before you add things back to the garage, sweep the floors with a large push broom that covers the entire floor. Take care of oil spills, broken shelves, loose knobs and any other damages that you find in there.

Install Shelves and Cupboards

One of the best ways to keep your garage organised is to install shelves and cupboards. You can construct some basic shelves with boards and planks and then use boxes or plastic bins to keep things organised. You can also add a workbench and cupboards to the garage to create a workspace and keep tools and equipment organised.

Take on these tasks and start the summer with a clean, organised garage!

The Garden

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to stop with your home. The spring months are the ideal time to do some spring cleaning in your garden so it will flourish and even be more usable during the summer.

Prepare the Garden

First, clean out your garden by removing dead plants, leaves, sticks and other debris that has found its way into your flower beds and vegetable patches during the winter. Pull weeds, till the soil, trim hedges and make basic preparations so that when the weather is warm enough you can add new plants.

You can hire a skip to make this process much easier. With a skip you’ll be able to remove stones, soil, branches, and other debris quickly, as you’ll be able to fill the skip and then dispose of the waste easily.

Repair Tools

Take this time to repair your garden tools so that when you start gardening again, your equipment will be ready. Things like rakes, hedge trimmers, shovels, lawn mowers, wheel barrows and other equipment take a lot of wear and tear, but making repairs each spring will keep them in good shape.

Paint and Repair Garden Features

Winter weather can take its toll on fences, trellises, water features, pathways and other garden features, so part of your spring cleaning plan should include making repairs to these. A fresh coat of paint and quick repairs can be all it takes to make your garden look brilliant and ready for the summer months again.

You probably aren’t exactly looking forward to spring cleaning, but when you take these tasks on one by one, your home and garden will be in excellent shape, clean and organised, so you can relax and enjoy the summer sun.
